Pharmacy First-Impetigo

The Pharmacy First Impetigo Service enables community pharmacists to assess and manage patients presenting with suspected impetigo without the need for a GP appointment. Under this service, the pharmacist undertakes a structured clinical assessment to confirm eligibility, rule out red flags, and provide appropriate treatment in line with national and local guidelines.

Where suitable, the pharmacist can supply a topical or oral antibiotic under a Patient Group Direction (PGD) or as an independent prescriber, ensuring timely and effective management of mild to moderate impetigo. Patients requiring further investigation or exhibiting severe symptoms are safely referred to their GP or another appropriate healthcare provider.

This service supports antimicrobial stewardship, improves access to care, and reduces pressure on GP practices by allowing pharmacists to deliver evidence-based management of a common skin infection within the community setting.
